Chapter One — The Night Everything Changed

Rain hammered the streets, washing the city's glitter into rivers of black and gold. Neon lights reflected across the wet pavement as Elena Moretti hurried toward the subway station, clutching her backpack tightly against her chest.

She hated working late.

The streets felt different after midnight.

Too quiet.

A black luxury sedan rolled slowly past her before disappearing around the corner. She barely noticed it.

Then...

A deafening gunshot shattered the silence.

She froze.

Another shot.

And another.

Heart racing, Elena ducked behind a brick wall. Across the street, several armed men emerged from the shadows, their voices sharp and urgent.

"Find the witness!"

Witness?

She hadn't meant to see anything.

But she had.

A powerful crime boss lay motionless beside the sedan while another man disappeared into the darkness with a briefcase.

The killers turned.

One of them pointed directly at her.

"There she is!"

Fear took over.

Elena ran.

Her footsteps echoed through narrow alleyways as shouts grew louder behind her.

She could hear them gaining.

A dead end.

Her breath caught.

No way out.

The men closed in, weapons raised.

"So," one of them sneered, "you saw something you shouldn't have."

Elena backed against the cold wall, searching desperately for an escape.

Then—

A figure dropped silently from the rooftop.

Before anyone could react, he disarmed one attacker with astonishing speed, sending the weapon skidding across the pavement. Another rushed forward, only to be knocked aside in moments.

The remaining men hesitated.

"You..." one whispered.

The stranger stood between Elena and the attackers, dressed in a dark suit, his expression calm and unreadable.

"You have ten seconds," he said evenly.

"No one leaves with the witness."

The alley fell silent.

The attackers exchanged uneasy glances.

Without another word, they retreated into the rain.

Elena stared at the man who had just saved her life.

"Who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling.

He looked at her for a long moment before answering.

"My name is Luca."

He glanced toward the empty street where the sedan had vanished.

"From this moment on, your life has changed."

Elena swallowed.

"What do you mean?"

Luca's gaze swept the rooftops, alert for any sign of danger.

"It means," he said quietly, "someone powerful wants you found."

"And someone even more powerful has ordered me to make sure they never reach you."

Lightning split the sky.

Neither of them noticed the hidden camera watching from a nearby rooftop.

Someone else already knew exactly where they were.
